Update, Jan 2023: Since this blog was posted we are proud to announce that Nimbus is officially a fully carbon-neutral company. We've also invested in initiatives that mean we’ve offset the carbon that we produced as a business over the last 11 years - making us the first hosting company to be carbon-negative.
There’s no getting away from it. The energy used by the internet and its supporting systems has a massively destructive impact on the environment. As a hosting company, we know we’ve got a responsibility to reduce that impact in every way we can – and to help our clients do the same.
We’re proud to say that today we’re on our way to becoming a carbon-neutral company, and are providing 100% renewable energy hosting. But our green journey began a long, long time ago. In fact, it started the day we opened our doors, and it’s seen us make sustainable, eco-friendly choices about the way we run our business, every step of the way. Let’s take a look…
2011: Sustainable infrastructure and tech
Nimbus went live, and made planet-positive decisions right from day one. We partnered with Virtus and Coreix, data centres run entirely on renewable energy and highly accredited with ISO 50001 and 14001. We also gained REGO certification (renewable energy guarantee of origin), giving our clients real confidence in our green hosting credentials.
From the start, we invested in energy-efficient tech, set up recycling systems to save our hardware from landfill, chose renewable energy tariffs for our HQ and gained The Green Web Foundation badge – for our own site, for our clients’ sites and for their customers’ sites too.
Eco-friendly hosting your clients will love.
Our clients have seen their sites’ carbon footprints drop by up to 92% after switching to us.2015: New offices with greener practices
We moved into new offices and took steps to make them greener. As well as introducing recycling bins, we launched a cycle-to-work scheme to reduce the carbon emissions created by our commute – and help our team take better care of their health.
2018: Making the office more efficient
We introduced automatic sensor lighting, using energy-efficient LED bulbs that switch off when they don’t detect movement. So if someone leaves their desk, the light in their section of the office turns off until they come back into the room.
2021: Electric car charging and CO2 monitoring
With our team working remotely during the pandemic, we took the opportunity to upgrade Nimbus HQ, introducing monitors that check CO2 levels in our office air, and remind us to keep levels healthy by opening windows.
We began offering electric company cars, and installed, Tesla charging points for our team and visitors. The same year, we actively formed partnerships with other sustainable, eco-friendly businesses, like Wholegrain Digital.
2022 & beyond
By the end of 2022, we’ll have taken a range of other steps such as replacing our company van with an electric model and installing a Tesla Power Wall. We’ll also continue to make Nimbus HQ an even greener place to work, introducing improvements, monitoring our energy use and measuring the energy we generate through our solar panels.
On top of that, we’ll keep educating our team about how they can live and work in a more eco-conscious way. Recently, our UX designer Joe Jones ran a helpful lunch-and-learn session for the team on climate and carbon footprints – educating everyone on the impact we have on the environment and encouraging people to work more sustainably.
