Eliminating Scope 1 and Scope 2 Emissions

To tackle our emissions head-on, we focused on eliminating our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Here’s how we did it:

• Scope 1 Emissions: We managed to eliminate our Scope 1 emissions by not servicing our air conditioning this year. Our audit partners confirmed that this only needs to be reported in the years it’s serviced, which wasn’t the case last year.

• Scope 2 Emissions: For Scope 2, we made two major changes:
• • Solar Panels and Battery Storage: We installed 76 solar panels on the roof of Nimbus HQ and added a battery to store excess energy.
  • Renewable Energy Supplier: We switched to a renewable energy supplier to cover any additional electricity needs.

Scope 3 emissions, which include employee commuting, business travel, and our tech purchases, presented the most significant challenge. 

Here’s how we addressed these:

• Electric Car Scheme: We implemented an electric car scheme, and now 25% of our employees lease electric cars through us.
• Hardware Recycling: We recycle all our old hardware, especially our servers, donating them to charities that refurbish and resell them.
• Reduced Tech Purchases: In 2023, we significantly reduced tech purchases, opting to keep laptops and other equipment for longer.
• Reduced Commuting: Employee commuting has been reduced by a staggering 75%, thanks to our policy of working from home three days a week and only coming into the office for two.

In addition to the major initiatives, we’ve also taken several smaller yet impactful steps, including:

• Soft Plastic Recycling: Implementing a soft plastic recycling program.
• Water-Efficient Installations: Installing more water-efficient taps and toilet flushes.
• Sustainability Team: Forming an internal team dedicated to promoting sustainability and employee engagement.

While we have made significant progress, our journey doesn’t stop here. We acknowledge that there are still remaining carbon emissions that we need to offset for now. However, we are committed to finding innovative ways to further reduce these emissions in the future.

Achieving a 58% reduction in our carbon emissions is a testament to the collective efforts of our team and our dedication to sustainability and offering carbon-neutral hosting.
